Independent Reading

  • Each student is paired with either The Maze Runner by James Dashner or The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  • Students will have a physical book as well as an ebook and audiobook through their OneNote class notebook
  • Each novel has a schedule that spaces the reading out over six weeks
  • 10 minutes at the start of each class Monday-Thursday is provided for reading
  • The rest of the week's pages along with a short assignment are completed outside of class.

Reading Schedules

All reading schedules can be found in the OneNote class notebook and on the teacher's EPMS website

Assignments

  • Each student will complete a short assignment on their own each week that is due Friday
  • All students will work through the same six assignments, but on different weeks
  • Assignments and assignment schedules can be found in the OneNote class notebook - paper copies will be provided for day users or those without internet
  • Exemplars of each assignment can be found in the class notebook and on the teacher's website

Assignments

  • Reading and assignments must be complete by Friday - work should still be complete and viewable in the student's notebook even if they are absent
  • The purpose of the assignment is to give the student something to share as part of a collaborative discussion with their peers
  • Students reading the same text will meet in small groups each Friday to share their work in a book-club-style meeting
  • Because work needs to be complete for discussion to happen, there will be a penalty of 20% the first time work is not complete and 50% for each time after

  • Word Wizard - selects three unfamiliar words in the text and their meaning
  • Illustrator - creates a visual aid in the form of an image, thinking map, or graphic organizer and two comments
